How to Remove Hard Inquiries From Your Credit Report
Hard inquiries are added when a lender checks your credit for an application. Inquiries you didn't authorize can be disputed and removed.
Spot inquiries you didn't approve
Review the inquiry section of each report. Note any lender you don't recognize or didn't apply with, including dealerships that ran your credit with several lenders without telling you.
Dispute unauthorized inquiries
Contact the lender first and ask them to withdraw the inquiry, then dispute it with the bureau. If you suspect identity theft, file a report at IdentityTheft.gov and place a fraud alert.
Know what you can't remove
Inquiries from applications you actually made are accurate and generally stay. They remain on your report for two years but usually only affect FICO scores for about 12 months.
Common questions
Do multiple auto or mortgage inquiries count separately?
FICO generally groups rate-shopping inquiries for auto, mortgage, and student loans made within a short window into one.
